The Kith Commons has two wings. The first is a member run cooperative that builds and maintains the Kithkeepers and the shared protocol for proving identity and vouching for one another, kept independent so no single company owns it. The second is a public agency that funds caregiving, paying people for real hours of care logged through their Kithkeeper. Together they keep identity in people’s hands and make sure the work of caring for others is finally paid.
The Kithkeeper began as a cybersecurity tool, a way to prove who you are without surrendering your data after biometric breaches made old identity systems collapse. But the same trusted record that secured your identity could also track what you give. By 2035 it had become a caregiving tool. Through a time bank called the Keep, every hour spent caring for elders, children, or people in need is logged privately and paid out as real work, giving caregivers the income and recognition they earned.
The crisis was a collapse of trust. Corporations hoarded biometric and personal data on everyone to track threats and crack down on communal living, and a breach was only a matter of time. Because biometrics can’t be reset like a password, the leaks made fraud rampant and identities nearly impossible to verify. The system built to control people destroyed itself. The world recovered by abandoning centralized identity, building zero-knowledge systems that put data back in people’s hands.
