Nigeria’s grid fails most days. Ours doesn’t. Each NextVillage runs on solar micro-grids and peer-to-peer web mesh built with React and Supabase. Models live on the phones, not the cloud. When the national fiber went down in 2030, we kept teaching, kept worshiping, kept shipping code.
Three AIs run here. ScriptureHub speaks Ogbia, Ijaw, and Pidgin, switching between scripture and React errors. A grid optimizer powers clinics. A teaching companion lives on David’s phone. Last year, the translation model hallucinated a theological phrase during a lectionary update; the Elder Council immediately shut the model down for forty-eight hours until our youth patched the training weights. Tech serves the village; the elders hold the kill-switch.
The NextVillage Digital Cooperative. Founded in 2028 when my mentors taught me that the cooperative would own the code, not me. The NVDC holds the grids, the models, the data. It is governed by voice-activated voting — important when half our elders never learned to write. Every decision about what the AI may say is made by people sitting together in a room. Mama Esther runs it now. She is sixty-eight. She has never coded. She has refused four foundation grants that came with strings.
Faith, education, and software are one activity. A boy memorizing scripture also memorizes function signatures. A grandmother correcting the AI’s Ogbia pronunciation is also correcting its theology.
