By 2035 every person walks with two agents who cannot conspire. one acts in the world, one keeps the memory, and the gap between them cannot be closed by any court, breach, or buyer. privacy stopped being a favour we beg from platforms and became a thing we hold. the surveillance economy was not banned. it was out-competed by an economy where your behavioural data is finally treated as capital you own.
Selene’s Proof, named for the moon. the moon carries the evidence of the collision that made it yet remembers nothing of the event. that is zero knowledge made physical: verify that something is true without learning, storing, or ever recovering what made it true. proof without a witness.
The dual-agent architecture. each person carries a Swordsman who acts and a Mage who remembers, and the two cannot collude. the [S] reaches into the world and forgets by design. the [M] holds memory and consent and never touches the world directly. neither is a master, because each is the other’s check. zero-knowledge proofs run between them, so the [S] can prove it served you faithfully without the [M] ever revealing who you are. the designs are open path, the separation is a public standard.
The City of Mages, on Drake Island. the city is not a backdrop to this world, it is the institution: no authority sits above it, the commons governs itself. here people learn to wield their own agents before setting out. the name is a promise, a drake is a dragon that has not yet flown. you arrive grounded and watched, and leave sovereign, flying on architecture you understand. it teaches the craft, tends the open standards, then lets you go. mastery here means you no longer need the city.
The attention economy ran on knowing you better than you knew yourself. by 2035 that fuel is gone, because no one can assemble the whole picture anymore. behavioural data became the seventh capital: something you accumulate, license on your own terms, and revoke. advertising did not die, it got honest, paying you directly for attention you choose to lend. the creepiest products simply stopped working, and almost nobody mourned them.
The great unmasking of the late 2020s. one agent provider was breached, and because its AI kept everything in one place, attackers reconstructed millions of private lives in an afternoon. the lesson was not better walls. memory you cannot lose is a weapon pointed at yourself. so systems were rebuilt to forget on purpose and to split what little they kept across agents that cannot be rejoined. when there is no single witness left to seize, there is nothing to unmask.
